Aditya Vikram Birla did his schooling from Kolkata and for a degree, he enrolled at the famous St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata. After which, he relocated to the United States and obtained his master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He upon returning to India joined his family business. He though was not satisfied with it and therefore, started his own venture in the textile industry. He was instrumental in bringing back his family’s textile and rayon business back on track. He then took the challenge of exploring his business into Oil sector and he was successful in it as well. He rather than moving to west decided to have a set up with eastern countries and set up a company named Indo-Thai Synthetics Company Ltd. in the year 1969 in Thailand. This was his group’s first ever overseas company. After the success of this venture, he set up various other companies in South-East and all of them were highly successful. It was he who made the Birla Group into a renowned Blue Chip company and also the largest business conglomerates in India. By the decade of the 1980s, he established as many as 19 companies in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Even before people in India knew what globalization is, he has already set up a global empire and placed India on the world map. The company expanded their businesses in core sectors such as cement, textiles, financial services, chemicals, fertilizers, petrol-refinery and software among others. Some of the biggest listed companies that he owns are Hindalco and Grasim among others. His companies have employed over 70,000 employees directly and 2 lakhs people indirectly. This is the contribution of one of the most influential businessmen named Aditya Birla to India.

For his contribution, he was felicitated with numerous awards over the years. Most notable of them are Man of the Year Award, Outstanding Citizen Award and Businessman of the Year Award among others. Posthumously, he was felicitated by All India Association of Industries with Lifetime Achievement Award.
