bell hooks is a famous writer, theorist, professor, and social critic. She deals with issues of race, gender, class, and sexual oppression. She was undeniably one of the most successful "cross-over" academics of the late twentieth century. She was born in Hopkinsville, KY. Her father was a janitor for the local post office and her mother was a homemaker She completed her studies at Stanford University and did B.A.Then she pursued M.A from the University of Wisconsin, in1976. Then she did Ph.D. (English), from the University of California Santa Cruz, 1987.
She obtained a doctorate degree in English literature. She began her teaching career. She knew that for a people historically and legally denied the right to education. She holds various positions at the University of California in Santa Cruz, California, till 1980. She moves to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She got the opportunity to teach African American Studies.
In 1988, she joined the faculty at Oberlin College, in Ohio. She would teach in Women's Studies. It is a program that now offered a critique of racism. In 1995, she get a post with the City College of New York. Then she moved to Henry Holt publishing company. She came out with Killing Rage: Ending Racism, a book that calls for a more proactive approach to solving the problem of racism in America.
She received American Book Award, Before Columbus Foundation, in 1991. She received for Yearning, Race, Gender, and Cultural Politics Writer's Award. Lila. She received an Image Award nomination from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 2001, for Happy to Be Nappy Children's Book of the Year designation.

She was born into an African-American working-class family to a janitor father Veodis Watkins and a maid mother Rosa Bell Watkins. She had a brother named Kenneth Watkins and five sisters named Sarah Watkins, Angela Watkins, Valeria Watkins, Theresa Watkins & Gwenda Watkins. She never married and had not any child. She named her "bell hook", which was derived from the name of her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hook.
