Gireesh Puthenchery was a remarkable Malayalam lyricist as well as a screenwriter. He also provided as a regulating authorities part of the Indian Performance Rights Society (IPRS). For seven times, for Best Lyrics, he won the State Film Award. He passed away on Feb 10, 2010, in Kozhikode.

Gireesh Puthenchery died on 10-02-2010 in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. He had a stroke disease and was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode. He was uderwent to medical treatment but his condition was not improved and besides these he suffered from a brain haemorrhage.
