Hrishikesh Mukherjee was born on 30-09-1922 in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. He was an Indian Film Director, Screenwriter, Editor, Assistant Director & Film Producer who known for his work in Hindi and Kannada films.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee, popularly known as "Hrishida" is one such person of Indian film industry.
 
He was a notorious legendary film director, best known for light-hearted comic dramas.He had directed 42 films during his career span which includes Chupke Chupke, Anand, Guddi, Abhimaan Gol Maal, Bawarchi, Kissi Se Na Kehna and Namak Haraam.
 
He started his film career initially as a cameraman, and then as a film editor, in B. N. Sircar's New Theatres in Calcutta in the late 1940s. He later continued to work as an editor and then as assistant director to Bimal Roy.He made his directional debut with a film "Musafir" in 1957 which didn't succeed but he got the fame with his next film "Anari".After that, he directed many films, Anuradha, Chhaya, Asli-Naqli, Anand, Anupama, Aashirwad Guddi (1971), Bawarchi, Gol Maal and Khubsoorat to name few.He was the writer for few of his films and also directed few TV serials as well. 'Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate' was his last film.

He was married and had two sons and three daughters. His wife died some 30 years before him and he also lost one of his sons. The Fashion Models Tapur Chatterjee & Tupur Chatterjee are his granddaughters.

  • The iconic words “Babu Moshay” in his milestone movie “Anand” were actually inspired by Raj Kapoor who used to call Hrishikesh Mukherjee as "Babu Moshay".He penned down the film when Raj Kapoor’s health condition was serious.
  • He suffered a severe arthritis attack in 1961. But he still directed Anupama and Asli Naqli from his wheelchair.
