Ismat Chughtai was born on 21-08-1915 in Budaun in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. She is an Indian Writer, Screenwriter, Dialogue Writer, Novelist, Author, Film Producer, Film Director, Memoirist & Essayist.

Ismat Chughtai Complete Bio & Career

Chughtai was had her earlier education got done from "Aligarh Muslim University." In the year 1940, she got her Bachelor of Arts degree from " Isabella Thoburn College." In the same year, from the "Aligarh Muslim University" she got the "Bachelor of Education degree" because her parents wished her to attain that degree. During this period she joined "(Progressive Writers Association)," where she has had a very first chance to meet with  one of the renown "women writer" named "Rashid Jahan" who also  actively involved in the movement  along with  "Chughtai", who became the true inspiration of "Chughtai " for writing  (realistic, challenging female characters).

She involved writing scripts for the number of films, and despite that, she even took participated in the first film as a Dialogue writer was shikayat was released in 1948. She acted in thirteen films and her 1973 released film "Garam Hawa" in which her acting skills got acknowledged and due to her performance, this film received many awards.

 She has introduced her own life as the main plot and presented the society with the problems of a woman's life and from the perspective of a woman  in the novel "Tadhi Likes." They have become famous because of their 'Lihaf' story. In this story written in 1941, she raised the issue of homosexuality among women . Writing this story for a woman at that time was an audacious act. Ismat had to pay the price of this audacity as an allegation of obscenity and a lawsuit.

she took the biggest risk of getting destroying herself image by presenting women's issues in the male-dominated society and she presented this issue in a very softly and also as a more sophisticated way. In her affair, the woman raises issues related to her fight for survival. She gave a distinction in the literature and the women's consideration in society. This shows how far their thinking was from their time. She raised female characters in her stories with a lot of awareness and this is why she is very close to her character's life.

She was so brave to raise the women issue in the societies despite that her writing novels " Angarey and also "Lihaaf" got banned in "South- Asian" regions due to her female-oriented stories influenced by outraged traditionalists. Her stories exhibit the cultural and social legacy of the province in which she has lived her life.
