Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Complete Bio & Career

Kiran finished her school level education from the Bishop’s Cotton Girl’s High School, Bangalore in 1968. Initially, she desired to become a doctor but ended up doing BSc in Zoology from the famous Mount Carmel College, Bangalore in 1973. For post-graduation, she enrolled at the Ballarat College, Melbourne University and completed her post graduation from there. 
 
Kiran started her professional career by getting employed as a brewer learner at the famous company Carlton & United Beverages in Australia. She worked there for almost four years and then changed her job and started working at Biocon Biochemicals Limited in Ireland. The very same year she founded her own company named Biocon in India. She started her venture with a mere capital 10,000 INR. It was not easy for her to do business in India as lack of funds kept on troubling her business. Whenever she applied for a loan, the banks rejected her proposals firstly because biotechnology was a totally new concept in India then and secondly because of her gender. In those days, a female entrepreneur was considered as a dumb idea and to top that coming up with a completely new concept was even unaccustomed. 
 
Kiran didn’t get disheartened and rather managed with whatever she had and kept on taking her company to new highs and is today considered as one of the leading firms in India. Biocon brought their IPO in the year 2004. After her company successfully listed at the exchange, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw became the richest woman in India then. 
 
Kiran also founded the Biocon Foundation. Through this foundation, she carried out philanthropic works. She actively carries out health and environmental programs to help the weaker section of the society. 
 
For her entrepreneurial achievements, she has received numerous accolades and honours. She has been conferred with the Padma Shri in 1989 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 from the government of India.
