Leela Samson was born on 06-05-1951 in Coonoor, Nilgiris in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. She is an Indian Dancer, Choreographer, Instructor, Writer, Administrator & Educationist who best-known for her work in Tamil Cinema.

Leela Samson Complete Bio & Career

Leela began learning the dance form Bharatnatyam after she was done with her graduation. She took her dancing lessons from the founder of Kalakshetra named Rukmini Devi Arundale. She after completion of her formal training got trained from the famous schools of Delhi called Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and Bhartiya Kala Kendra. 
 
She then established her own dance group called Spanda. Her dancing career is so inspiring that two documentaries have been made on her illustrious dancing career. Documentaries are titled The Flowering Tree and Sanchari. She is the disciple of Justin Mccarthy and Joyce Paul Poursabahian. 
 
She was made the director of the famous dance school Kalakshetra, Chennai in 2005. She worked there till 2012.  She is also made the chairperson of Sangeet Natak Academy. A post which she held from 2010-2014. She also headed the Central Board of Film Certification from 2011-2015.
 
She was severely criticised during her tenure as the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification. She was alleged with charges such as financial irregularities, anti-Hindu bias and illegal appointments amongst others.

For her contribution to India’s traditional dance form, Bharatnatyam, she has been given Padma Shri Award by the Government of India in 1990. She also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1999-2000.
