Payal Rohatgi was born in Hyderabad but soon relocated to Ahmedabad and completed her schooling from Udgam School in Ahmedabad. She was a brilliant student. She enrolled at Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering, Ahmedabad and obtained her engineering degree with distinction from there. She was a fitness freak during her school and college days and won various sports competition.
 
She was always interested in modeling and therefore participated in Femina Miss India in the very same year when Dia Mirza, Lara Dutta, and Priyanka Chopra also participated. After which, she represented India at the famous Miss Tourism World Pageant and also won the title of Supermodel Miss Tourism World. She then appeared in numerous commercials of brands like Nirma, Jaguar Bath Panel, Dabur Hair Oil and Amul among others. Finally, she was offered a film and made her acting debut with the film called Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hain? in the year 2002.
 
After which for the next 10 years, she appeared in a number of films most of which were B-grade Bollywood films. As an actress, she was mostly seen in adult films or doing item numbers. Her performance as an actress was highly rated but still couldn’t get herself meaningful roles in over 10 years of her acting career. Her films like Tauba Tauba, Fun - Can Be Dangerous Sometimes and Dil Kabaddi among others was among the most noted ones. She is currently associated with IHRO (International Human Rights Organization) and using her celebrity status to educate people about the awareness of education and health.
 
In addition to the silver screen, she garnered a lot of attention when she entered the Bigg Boss house in 2008. She has participated in various other reality shows like Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout, Raaz Pichhle Janam Ka and Nach Baliye 7 among others. She also acted in some famous television series such as 2025 Jaane Kya Hoga Aage, Agent Raghav - Crime Branch, and Suryaputra Karn among others.
