Ritu Phogat hails from famous Phogat family of Haryana. Like her sisters, she too started getting trained in wrestling by her father ever since she was 8 years old. She dropped out of studies after 10th standard as she decided to fully concentrate on her wrestling career. She came to limelight after she won the Gold Medal at Common Wealth Wrestling Championship in 2016. She also became the first wrestler from India to win a medal in World U23 Championships.
However, she used to fight in the same weight category as her cousin Vinesh Phogat and she could never beat her. Hence she decided to quit wrestling and began her career as a professional MMA fighter in 2019. She fought her first bout against Kim Nam Hee and won it by knock out in just 3 minutes.
