A creative and highly positive being, Salim Khan has been a tremendous actor and a skilful scriptwriter. Belonging to a non- filmy background, the star never thought of entering the ' Lights, Action and Camera. industry' until he met film director K. Amarnath in the wedding of Kamal Barjatya' (son of film producer Tarachand Barjatya). The Director offered him the role of a supporting actor in his forthcoming film Baraat to which he agreed and moved with him to Mumbai. This is how his career in the film industry began.
He met veteran writer Javed Khan during the making of the film Sarhadi Lootera and decided to join hands as a writer. They together formed a formidable pair and came to known as the Salim- Javed duo. Together as a writer, they gave various hit films like Haathi Mere Saathi, Patthar Ke Phool, Zanzeer, Trishul, Mr. India, Sholay, Deewar and Seeta Aur Geeta, are some of the iconic movies which they scripted together. However, the partnership finally ended after 11 years of association. After which, he started writing individually and finally retired in 1996.

He was born to Abdul Rashid Khan. He has been married twice. He first married Rajput girl named Sushila Charak in the year 1964. She later converted to Islam and changed her name to Salma Khan. The couple together has 3 sons named Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, and Sohail Khan and a daughter named Alvira Khan Aghnihotri. Actor Atul Aghnihotri is his son in law. He then married actress Helen Ann Richardson in 1981 and they adopted a daughter named Arpita Khan.
