Sohini was born in a family where her father Rudraprasad and mother Swatilekha both were famous actors in Bengali Cinema. So Sohini got the talent of acting by birth and continued it as a profession. After completing her Education In Kolkata, she decided to learn acting. She joined the theatre group ''Nandikar'' of which her parents have also been part for a long time. Sohini becomes one of the best actors of the group following her mother Swatilekha. She performed in many Plays such as Babli, Chitrangda, Bappaditya, Dulia, Madhabi, Gotraheen and many more.
Her debut film was ''Paromitar Ek Din'' in 2000 which was a big hit and brings a lot of popularity to her. She also won the best supporting actress award for her performance in the film at the National Film Awards. Her next film was Icche which was directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. This film was based on a novel written by the author Suchitra Bhattacharya. The other famous films of her career are Alik Sukh, Posto, Belaseshe, Sanjhbati. She also appeared on television as Thakurma in the show Thakurma Jhuli.
