Vijay Shankar is a middle-order hard-hitting batsman and can bowl medium-pace as well. Over the years, he has established himself as arguably one of the most important cog in Tamil Nadu’s line-up. He is very strong on the on-side, and also loves driving on the up. Had a fruitful domestic season in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 domestic season. He, however, missed out on a lot of seasons during 2016 due to a groin injury. 
 
He was eventually rewarded for his performance with a berth in India A call-up. He made this opportunity count by scoring a brisk half-century on debut against Australia A. He then focused equally on his bowling as well to earn a position of a genuine all-rounder rather than just batsmen.  Since coming from a well-to-do family, his father and elder brother helped him hone his skills by building an indoor net facility on their terrace. He started off as an off-spinner but soon transformed into a medium pacer to get a break in Tamil Nadu State cricket team as it was already overloaded with spinners. 
 
He finally made it to the side and scored a brilliant 63 and took 2 wickets as well in his debut match against Vidarbha. He was contracted by Chennai Super Kings in 2013 but in 3 seasons with them, he got just 1 game to play. After a great 2016 domestic season, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2016 IPL auction. He got very few chances but was effective in the chances that he got. He after a great 2017 domestic season was finally given a national call-up as a replacement to star bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar against the touring Sri Lankan side in November 2017. He was roped in by Delhi Daredevils for a staggering 3.2 crores at the IPL player auction 2018 by Delhi Daredevils. He was included in the Indian squad that toured New Zealand as a replacement of Hardik Pandya. He played exceptionally well in the T20Is and also scored a fine 45 in the only chance that he got to bat in the series. He was again included in the Indian squad when Australia toured India. In that series also he played a handy innings and was instrumental with his bowling as well. Though he performed average in the opportunities that he got, he was still included in the World Cup 2019 squad.
