Bai Ling is one of the most famous actresses in the People's Republic of China besides Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi. As a 14 -year-old she was recruited for the army and came here for three years with a theatre group to Tibet. After her army time, she went to Beijing and played theatre there. She was involved in 1989 during the student protests that were bloodily covered up at Tiananmen Square.  She immigrated to the United States in 1991 and took acting lessons at Lee Strasberg's famous Actors Studio in New York City. After numerous roles in Hollywood is back in Chinese productions today. The American magazine People named Bai among the "50 most beautiful people in the world" in 1998.
 
In addition to her film career, Bai Ling is also known for her sensational and often provocative performances in major media events.  In June 2005, she was the first woman from the People's Republic of China to grace the title page of the American men's magazine Playboy. Because her scenes were removed as Senator Bana Breemu from the (then unfinished) movie Star Wars: Episode III - The Revenge of the Sith, Ling claimed that the photos from the Playboy are the reason for this. However, George Lucas denied this immediately - the scenes had been cut for film technical reasons. Ling also starred in the US show They Can Act - But Can Sing?.
 
She starred in the feature film Shanghai Baby, an adaptation of the eponymous book by Chinese author Zhou Wei Hui, which was banned in China and caused a book burning incident. She also had a brief guest appearance in 2007 in the American hit series Lost. In February 2008, she was arrested at the "Los Angeles International Airport" for lifting by a packet of batteries and two magazines also. In March 2008, she pleaded guilty to the "disorder of order" and was sentenced to a fine of $ 200.She also participated in the fifth season of the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew and was accompanied during a drug withdrawal.
