According to reports earlier Spanish authors he allegedly made to 1642 a trip to Madrid, where he is said to have studied in the royal art collections.

In 1645, Murillo married in the Church of the Magdalena in Seville Beatriz Sotomayor y Cabrera, with whom he had at least ten children, but some of them died early. Murillo made his artistic breakthrough in 1645-46 when he made 11 large paintings for the cloister of the Monastery of St. Francis in Seville, which are now in various museums, including the poor feeding of St. Francis. Diego de Alcala, the angelic kitchen of St. Diego de Alcala and the death of St. Clare. He had a special success with his portraits of the Virgin Mary in the form of the Immaculate Conception which is already very popular and revered in Spain, and with the theme Virgin with Child, In addition, he painted countless other works on a variety of religious topics, many of them in such a natural and popular style, that they are "hardly distinguishable from genre images .
