Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi was a popular Indian vocalist known in the Hindustani classical music industry. He was famous for the devotional music's renditions and the singing form 'khayal'. He was inclined towards musical instruments like Tanpura and harmonium from childhood. He used to follow processions with music bands. He would end up sleeping anywhere after that, creating trouble for his family to find him.
 
Agasara Channappa was his 1st music teacher.He learned Ragas Bhimpalasi and Bhairav. He developed his skills with advanced training. He later approached classical singer and priest Pandit Shyamacharya Joshi to learn singing and playing harmonium. He accompanied Shree Shamacharya Joshi to Bombay for recording songs. But Shree Shamacharya Joshi fell ill and was able to record only a few songs. This gave chance to Bhimsen Joshi to record rest of the songs, giving him a major breakthrough in his career.
 
He was inspired to become a musician after hearing Raga Jhinjhoti by Abdul Karim Khan in Thumri "Piya Bin Nahi Aavat Chain". He was a fan of Pandit Sawai Gandharva.He traveled to Dharwad, Pune and then Gwalior in search of Guru. He joined Madhava Music School which was operated by Maharajas of Gwalior. Sawai Gandharva became his guru and he learned from him by staying at his house. His 1st live performance was when he was 19 years old. HMV released his debut album in 1942, containing devotional songs in both Hindi and Marathi language.
 
His popular ragas include Miyan Ki Todi, Shuddha Kalyan, Puriya Dhanashri, Bhimpalasi, Multani, Darbari. He recorded a Jugalbandi with the Carnatic singer M. Balamuralikrishna.He was influenced by Smt. Kesarbai Kerkar, Ustad Amir Khan, and Begum Akhtar. He was famous for his bhakti songs in Dasavani, Kannada, Santavani, and Marathi.
 
He had also worked as a playback singer for many films such as Basant Bahar, Sandhya Raga, Birbal My Brother, Ankahee etc. His songs "Ramya Hi Swargahun Lanka", "e pariya sobagu", 'Bhagyadalakshmi Baaramma' were famous. He suffered from bilateral pneumonia and gastrointestinal bleeding in 2010.Though he recovered slightly, but his condition became worse and he took his last breath in January 2011.

He was born to a homemaker Godavaribai and an author of Kannada-English dictionary Gururaj Joshi in a Madhwa Brahmin family. He had 15 siblings. His mother died when he was young. His stepmother raised him. He married his maternal uncle's daughter Sunanda Katti in 1944. The couple has 4 kids including Anand, Usha, Raghavendra, and Sumangala. He married again with his co-actor from Kannada play Bhagya-Shree, Vatsala Mudholkar without separating from his previous wife.
