After watching West End production of the musical ‘Chicago’, she got influenced to become an Actress. With the goal of becoming an actress in the future, Sørensen joined the Danish National School of Theatre.
 
While still training at the Danish National School of Theatre, Sørensen made her acting debut by essaying the role of a receptionist on the television series ‘The Eagle’ in 2005. She gained notability with her role of Roxie Hart with the Det Ny Theater’s production of Chicago in 2007.
 
Birgitte Hjort Sorensen got her first breakthrough role of her career in 2010 when she was offered the role of a visionary journalist named Katrine Fønsmark, in the television political drama Borgen. Her performance as a strong female adherent earned her international fame, especially in the U K. In the coming years, she starred in ‘Magi I luften, ‘Truth about men’, and ‘Balladen om Marie Krøyer. For her strong performance in At World’s End and Ved verdens ende, she got nominated for the Robert Award under the category of Best Actress. She got severe attention after she appeared in a one-off episode called ‘Hardhome’ of the popular HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’ as Karsi in 2015. Her most notable role till date came in 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2 as Kommissar.
