Slim along with his siblings were trained with the basic skills for doing business at a very young age by their father. Slim was only 12 years old when he bought his first shares in a Mexican bank. His father died when he was just 13, Slim joined his father’s business and worked in it till he turned 17. After which, Slim started his own by trading in Mexico and soon after started with his own brokerage firm which invested in individual businesses. At 25, his capital had grown immensely, that he started merging with other companies or bought them completely. In the next 15 years, he continued to expand his empire by forming and procuring companies in various industries. By 1980, he had amalgamated his all procured ventures into the parent company ‘Grupo Galas’.
 
During the meltdown in Mexico in 1982, Slim increased his pace to acquire businesses and purchased a considerable percentage of shares in the Mexican industries of international companies, which includes a 50% stake in ‘The Hershey Company’. After the domestic acquisition, Slim's interests reached beyond Latin America. He fostered a US branch of his telephone company ‘Telmex’, and also acquired stake in a US-based mobile company, ‘Tracfone’, 
 
Apart from a successful businessman, he is also a philanthropist. He has started few NGOs in Mexico; These NGOs concentrate mostly on Mexico City and take care of education, arts, and healthcare. He also looked after sports and downtown restoration.
 
The prestigious 'Forbes' magazine has named him the richest man in the world for four times. His immense treasure is entirely self-made.
 
Slim married to Soumaya Domit in 1967.  The couple was blessed with 6 children. His wife died in 1999.
 
As per the latest report of Forbes, his net worth is estimated at US$50 billion and he was positioned 7th on Forbes list of richest men on Earth.
