Charlie Chaplin Complete Bio & Career

Charlie Chaplin is famous for his character ‘The Tramp’. His bowler hat and moustache were the talking points during his era. He was arguably the first ever superstar of the film industry. His childhood was spent in adversity as his father abandoned his mother and his half-brother. His mother was a music hall singer. Her mother lost her voice in the middle of an act and that introduced Chaplin to the stage after producer pulled in 5-year-old young boy to join the stage. This is how his journey started.

Following her mother’s legacy, he too decided to become a stage actor and used all her mother contacts to become a showman. He finally made his acting debut as a page boy in Sherlock Home Production. He teamed up with the sketch comedy group of Fred Karno and soon became this troupe’s star. He travelled to the United States with the troupe and was noticed by filmmaker Mack Sennett who signed him for $150 a week. After failing to make his mark in his first film titled Make A Living, he decided to play a single character who can be identified. Thus “The Little Tramp” was born. He first played this character in the film called Kid Auto Races at Venice in 1914.

In 1915, he appeared in 35 films and joined Essanay Company which agreed to pay him $1250 per week. In 1917, he was contracted by Mutual Company which signed him for a whopping $670,000 yearly. After signing with his new company, he gave some of his best performances in films like The Rink, One A.M., and Easy Street among others. In the decade of the 1920s, he gave some of the landmark films such as The Gold Rush, A Woman in Paris, and The Circus among others. He also became the producer by now and started his own production company called United Artists along with Mary Pickford, D.W. Griffith, and Douglas Fairbanks.

His off-screen personality too made news as news of his affairs with his co-actors started doing the rounds. He later started composing music as well and gave his music score in one of his biggest hit film City Lights. His romantic links banned him in some US States. His last film A Countess From Hong Kong was his last and only colour film that he did in his illustrious career.
