Dries Mertens’s youth career began at a local academy in Leuven. He was just 11 years of age when he passed the youth system’s trial and post which for the next 5 years, he played for various youth clubs. He made his club level football debut by representing Eendracht Aalst in the 2005-06 season.

 

A year later, he was transferred to AGOVV Apeldoorn on loan. The club’s management was highly impressed by his skills and made a bid for him which was finally accepted by his parent Gent. The year 2007-08 was the turning point of his career as he smashed as many 15 goals in the 38 matches that he played for the club in that season. He was named the captain of the team and was also voted as the player of the year.

 

He was then contracted by Utrecht in 2009 for a five-year deal. After his debut season, he was voted the club’s player of the year. He after proving his mettle at the club level was drafted in the national side and was named the captain of the Belgium football team in 2011. From 2011 to present time, he is still the captain of Belgium national football team.

 

He was roped in for a whopping €10 million by PSV Eindhoven in 2011. Since 2013, he has been associated with the Italian club Napoli and recently scored his 50th goal for the club in 132 outings.
