Govind Nihalani was born on 19th August 1940 in Karachi, British India. He is an Indian Cinematographer, Director, and Screenwriter along with being a Film Producer. He has been directing Hindi films from 80s, and have additionally worked in the television industry.

Govind Nihalani Complete Bio & Career

Govind Nihalani and his family relocated to India after the segregation of India and Pakistan in 1947. He began his career as a cinematographer, after earning a Graduation degree in Cinematography from the Shree Jaya Chamrajendra polytechnic in Bangalore in 1962. He started his career as an Assistant Cinematographer by assisting the legendary V.K.Murthy. He then joined hands with Shyam Benegal and assisted him in his initial films. Benegal and Nihalani are noted for their socially pertinent films.
 
He then moved forward in his career as a Director with the film Aakrosh which was released in the year 1980. The star cast of the movie was Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri. The movie did well at the box office and he was rewarded with Filmfare Best Director Award. He then directed many famous films such as Ardh Satya, Aghaat, Pita, Hazar Chauras Ki Maa, Takshal and last one being Dev, which was released in the year 2004.
