Helen first introduced to the Hindi films by her friend as well as an actress for the job of a chorus-dancer in the films Awara and Shabistan in 1951. Then after she was signed for the role of a solo dancer for the films such as Hoor-e-Arab and Alif Laila. However, her career major breakthrough happened through the film Howrah Bridge (a film by Shakti Samant) in which she has had dance performance in the song "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" sung by Geeta Dutt. In the early stage of her career, Geeta Dutt was the singer who sang many songs for her in which she gave her dance performance.
Her first ever film was Hum Hindustani in 1960 in which she played the lead role along with Sunil Dutt and Joy Mukherjee. In between 60 and ‘70s, Bollywood legendary playback singer, Asha Bhosle sang so many songs in which Helen gave her dance hit numbers. In 1965, she appeared in the film Gumnaam in a supporting role. For her outstanding acting in this film, she was awarded by the Best Supporting Actress at the Filmfare Awards. She played a tense role in the Shakti Samanta's film Pagla Kahin Ka in 1970. In which she portrayed the role of a rape victim. Bollywood renowned writer Salim Khan helped to establish herself in the film industry by suggesting her name for the films in which he co-scripted with Javad Akhtar. In the 70’s she appeared as a dancer as well as supporting actress in some of the hit films of that decade such as Caravan, Hulchul, Upaasna, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche, Anamika, Geeta Mera Naam, Sholay, Imaan Dharam, Khoon Pasina, Amar Akbar Anthony and Don.
In 1979, she played a supporting role in the film Lahu Ke Do Rang in 1979. Her acting was highly acclaimed by the critics and she won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Filmfare awards. Helen decided to get retired from the films in 1983, but afterward, she appeared in a guest role in the number of the Bollywood films such as Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Mohabbatein, Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye and Heroine among others.
She was born to Jairag and Marlene Richardson. She has two brothers named Roger Jairag, Richard Jairag, and a sister named Jennifer Richardson. She is married to actor/Dialog writer Salim Khan since 1981 and together have a daughter Arpita Khan. Bollywood actors Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan are her stepsons. Previously, she was married to Prem Narayan Arora from 1957 to 1974.
