Lynn Shelton relocated to Seattle at a very young age with her family and that is where she grew up. She enrolled at the University of Washington School of Drama to learn acting. For post graduation, she relocated to New York and attended School of Visual Arts and obtained her Masters of Fine Arts degree. She started off her career as a film editor and then started making short films which were acknowledgd by many. She though always dreamt of becoming a director and finally made her directorial debut through much acclaimed film We Go Way Back in the year 2006. A couple of years later, she directed and produced the dark comedy film tilted My Effortless Brilliance. Since then, she has directed a number of films such as Your Sister's Sister, Laggies, and Sword of Trust among others. Many of her films have been shown at various film festivals and have won various awards as well.

In addition to films, she had also directed a number of television series as well. She started off by directing an episode of American period drama series titled Mad Men in the year 2010. Her venture New Girl too was highly praised. She recently directed the miniseries Little Fires Everywhere which went on air in 2020. She had also acted in the series Maron in the year 2016. She was arguably one of the most creative filmmakers and her absence will be badly missed.
