Bol intended to begin his career in footballrst, but, he got refused by every team he showed up to, he was determined to go to basketball. An American scout noticed him during a meeting with the Sudanese national team, and he convinced him, in his twenties, to move to the United States. Bol arrived in the US without knowing a word of English and, according to some facts, without being able to read and write; this greatly hindered the already critical setting in his new homeland.
Manute Bol first visited the Fairleigh Dickinson University; subsequently, he passed, despite struggles with English, to Cleveland State University, to get into the third and final year of college at the University of Bridgeport. It was during his last year as a collegiate that, in the face of the best school performances, he was able to participate in the NCAA basketball tournament. They comment the figures of this season alone: 22.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 7.1 blocks per game. The Washington Bullets engaged Bol in the second round of the 1985 draft; he became the highest athlete ever to be on the pitch in an NBA. Bol signed one of his most famous companies: he totalled 397 blocks in 80 games, (Avg of 4.96), in addition to being the second highest in the history of the league (behind only Mark Eaton), is an absolute record for a rookie. It was mainly for this reason that, when he was traded to the Golden State Warriors, Coach Don Nelson had the idea to make him attack with a certain regularity behind the three-point line.
The result was not very positive, but Bol, in the 1988-89 vintage alone, still scored 20 triples; once he even scored six baskets of three in a single game. Also in this season, Bol reached again very high peaks in the blocked (4.3 average). The Warriors adventure only lasted for two seasons, and at the end of 1990, it made its arrival to the 76ers. On March 3, 1993, playing with the Sixers against the Suns of his friend Charles Barkley, he scored six triples of 12 attempts in the second half, which marked the best triple mark scored by a Sixers player in a half match.
In his best years, he signed million-dollar contracts, both with his teams and with sponsors (Nike, Kodak and Toyota). With his cheerful and extroverted character, he achieved great popularity. He spent the money on luxury cars (adapted for his height). He had bought houses in, Egypt, Maryland and Khartoum (the capital of Sudan). In 1995, Milwaukee Bucks suspended the contract to Manute without actually debuting. His arthritis was beginning to be a problem, and he could not keep up with the physical demands of competition. After playing in Uganda and Qatar, he retired from the game ultimately.
