Maribel Guardia rose to prominence after getting elected as Miss Costa Rica in the year 1978. After which, she went on to represent her nation at the Miss Universe and Miss World beauty pageant the same year. During her participation at the Miss Universe beauty pageant, she was offered roles by famous Televisa producer named Sergio Bustamante. However she returned back to her country but after a couple of years, she accepted the role and left for Mexico.
 
She after landing in Mexico decided that she will stay in Mexico and thus became a citizen of Mexico and started building her career there. She soon became a small screen star and straightaway jumped into feature films. She made her film debut through Mexican film Como Mexico No Hay Dos. By the late 1980s, she became a recording artist and at the same time also appeared in numerous Telenovelas as well. She featured on the cover page of almost all leading beauty and fashion magazine in Latin America. She starred in over a dozen of telenovelas including Tú y Yo. Aventuras En El Tiempo, Misión S.O.S. aventura y amor, and Al diablo con los guapos among others. She also made goodwill appearances at a lot of charity functions and helped raise the funds. Her performing skills completely overshadowed her acting skills. Now she is in her forties and has matured gracefully and is still regarded as a beauty icon in entire Latin America. She was last seen in Mexican telenova Muchacha italiana viene a casarse from 2014 to 2015. In addition to being a telenova star, she is also a social media star and has over 3 million followers on Instagram.
