Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich was a popular German singer and actress. She was having both American and German citizenships. She herself came up with a name “Marlene” by clubbing and contracting her name. She went to Auguste-Viktoria Girls' School and later the Victoria-Luise-Schule for her graduation. She learned violin and was interested in poetry and theater. She learned acting skills at Max Reinhardt’s drama school. She appeared on stage as a chorus girl with Guido Thielscher's Girl-Kabarett vaudeville-style entertainments’ tour. She got small roles in Max Reinhardt's dramas. She made her debut in movies with a small role in the movie’ The Little Napoleon ‘.She played different roles in, William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Frank Wedekind's Pandora's Box, George Bernard Shaw's Back to Methuselah, Misalliance, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
 
Her career took off when she received a breakthrough role of a sexy cabaret singer ‘Lola Lola,’ in the UFA-Paramount co-productions' ‘The Blue Angel ‘.The movie introduced the song "Falling in Love Again" known as her signature song. After the huge success of ‘The Blue Angel ‘, she shifted to the United States under the Paramount Pictures’ contract. She was seen in 6 movies directed under Paramount. Her mysterious and glamorous femme fatale image was created. Her role in the movie Morocco as a cabaret singer was well appreciated by the audience. She was cast in movies like Dishonored, Shanghai Express, Blonde Venus, The Scarlet Empress, The Devil Is a Woman. She had worked with Sternberg for all these movies.
 
After ending the association with Sternberg, She worked in a movie ‘Desire‘ which was a romantic comedy. Later she worked in movies like I Loved a Soldier, Destry Rides Again, Seven Sinners, The Spoilers A Foreign Affair, Stage Fright, Rancho Notorious, Witness for the Prosecution, Touch of Evil etc.She never looked back and worked in a number of movies in her career. She had even worked in silent films during the initial period of her career. Her career started falling after breaking a thigh while performing at one of the shows in 1975.’ Nehmt nur mein Leben ‘, her autobiography was published in the year 1979.She suffered from renal failure and breathed last in 1992 at the age of ninety. She had put humanitarian efforts and helped in housing the French and German exiles during wartime. She had provided financial support and advocated for their US citizenship.
