A well-known name in football –Robert van Persie was born and brought up in Rotterdam. His mother Jose Ras is a painter and teaches special needs children, and his father Bob is a sculptor. From a misbehaved kid at school to becoming record goalscorer for Netherlands National Team of all the time, he has come a long way in his professional career.
Van Persie joined SBV Excelsior when he was five. He played with the same team till he was 16 after which he joined Feyenoord Club. An injury to the player at the club opened up a position for Persie in the first team. He made his debut for the club at the age of 17. For his performance in the season, he won the KNVB Best Young Talent Award.
His stint with the Feyenoord club is the most controversial of all the clubs he has played so far. The worsening relationship between Van Persie and the clubs manager Bert Van Marwjik led him to be demoted to reserve squad despite his performance for the clubs in the previous seasons. Citing his behavioral issues, Persie was made to spend most of his time on the bench in the 2003-2004 season.
Persie's career took a significant turn when he signed a deal with the Arsenal club on May 17, 2004. It was here that he became a center-forward from a left-winger due to the vision of the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. He made his debut for the club in the same season coming in as a substitute player ensuring a victory over Manchester United. The career with Arsenal spanning over eight years saw him earning many laurels and credits to highlight his career, which was also marked with several injuries. He was also capped in the 2011-12 season and went on to score the fastest goal of the season. He finishes the season as the leading goal scorer in the premier league with 30 goals to his credit.
He then transferred to Manchester United for the 2012-2013 season and made his debut in August. He stayed with the club for three seasons after which he moved to Fenerbahce Turkish club till the 2018 season, which saw him return to Feyenoord. He scored his 300th goal with the club and also helped his team claim the KNVB Cup for the 13th time.
He scored his first international goal in 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Since then he has represented the Netherlands in more than 100 international matches with nearly 50 goals to his credit. He capped his national team in 2014 FIFA world cup. He announced his retirement from professional football on May 12, 2019, and intends to focus on his family before planning his future.
