The American actress, she initially got a chance to play minor roles in the sitcoms such as Day by Day. In the year 1988, the movie team of Purple People Eater approached her for playing the major role. As a matter of fact, she received the Young Artist Award in the category of Best young actress under 9 years of age. Additionally, her starring roles can also be seen in plenty of other movies such as Patriot Games in 1992, Monkey Trouble in 1994, Alaska in 1996, All I want for Christmas in 1991, Hocus Pocus in 1993, and Now & Then in 1995. In the year 1999, she was given the opportunity to perform in the role which provided the turning point in her career. This role helped her to receive Academy Award for her excellent performance in the movie – American Beauty. Due to this movie, she was internationally recognized and the opportunities kept flowing. 
 
In due course, she landed the lead role in the movie Ghost World which was filmed in the year 2001 and was nominated for Global Gold Awards in the category – Best Actress in Comedy or Motion picture comedy. Her other independent movies include Dark corners, Winter of Frozen Dreams, and Train. Recently, in the year 2016, she played the role of Morgan in the television series – Colony. She got this recurring role after a long career break.
