After high school, William started working at WGN-TV. He soon directed several documentaries and live television shows. One of his earliest works ‘The People vs Paul Crump’ was awarded at the San Francisco International Film Festival. This success introduced him to the producer David Wolper. After moving to Hollywood in 1965, his debut feature film as a director ‘Good Times’ was released in 1967. This was followed by several art films including ‘The Boys in the Band’ and ‘The Birthday Party’. He saw great success with the 1971 movie ‘The French Connection’, which was not only critically acclaimed but was also commercially successful. The movie bagged five Academy Awards that included Best Director and Best Picture. In 1973, Friedkin’s another successful movie titled, ‘The Exorcist’ was released. The movie is considered as one of the greatest horror movies of all-time and it bagged Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing and Best Screenplay. The movies which followed were not very successful and failed to gain critical acclaim. His other notable works include ‘Rampage’, ‘Sorcerer’, ‘Jade’ and ‘The Guardian’. 

 

He has won several awards including the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Saturn Award, Directors Guild of America Award for his directorial ventures.
