Ziyi has got immense interests in gymnasts and dance during her childhood. Due to her talents, she got selected to pursue her training at Beijing Dance College. Later, she shifted to pursue acting proficiency by joining Central Drama Academy in Beijing. Later, when she was 19 years old the popular director Zhang Yimou auditioned her for a shampoo commercial. He was, in fact, selecting the actress for his movie – The Road Home. Ultimately, he selected Zhang to perform in the lead role as a young girl in his movie.  
 
In the year 2000, got an opportunity to play the lead role in the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as Jen Yu. This movie proved to be a successful hit across the country as well as internationally. Additionally, she bagged Best Supporting Actress Award for her brilliant performance from Toronto Film Critics Festivals. Later, in 2001 she landed with the opportunity to perform in an American Movie – Rush Hour 2 along with the famous co-artists Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. 
 
However, during her first American movie, she did not know to speak English and recommended the translation. Eventually, she learned English which was followed by subsequent American movie opportunities. Her other American movies include House of Flying Daggers, Memoirs of a Geisha, Horsemen – Remake, and much more. Recently, in the year 2013, she has won the Huabiao Awards for the category – Outstanding Actress for the movie The Grandmaster.
