Short Biography
Purushottama Lal was born on 28th August 1929. He was popularly known as P. Lal. He was an Indian Essayist, Poet, Professor, Translator and a Publisher. He was the originator and publisher of Writers Workshop in Calcutta, which was formed in 1958.

Purushottamalal, the founder and publisher of Writers Workshop in Kolkata, was a multi-talented personality. P. Lal, as he was commonly known, was a poet, essayist, translator, academic, and publisher.
Professor P. Lal wrote as many as 8 poetry books, many books on children stories, over a dozen books on literary criticism and most importantly a large number of translations from different languages, into English. But the best-known work of him as a translator perhaps is the translation of the entire epic, Mahabharata into English. He has also translated many religious works such as 21 volumes of Upanishads, and many modern writers’ works as well such as Tagore and Premchand.
His translation of Mahabharata was not only poetic and swift for the readers but also a complete work in any language. In 1958, he founded the Writers Workshop. Since its foundation, over 3000 volumes of Indian literary works have been published. Many authors, who went on to fame, published their first books from here which include the likes of Vikram Seth and Pritish Nandy. Seahorse in the sky by G Kameshwar and Labyrinth by ArunabhaSengupta were among his latter works with which he was engaged in his final years.
He was an honorary Professor of English at St. Xavier’s College, where he did his higher studies, for over forty years. He also visited in many American colleges and universities such as Hofstra University, University of Illinois, Ohio University, Berea College and Western Maryland College.
