At the young age of "sixteen," she debuted in Hindi films in the year 1960. When she entered into movies she did not do any acting course just she was had a little knowledge of acting. But at her time all other companions have had “classical" expertise and to compete and attain success in the films, she began the training of “Bharata Nat yam" and "Kathak." When she turned out to be a trained classical dancer in her every film her dance was going to be displayed more. She got her first break from the movie “Junglee” released in 1961 opposite the male lead was "Shammi Kapoor" and this film became the stepping stone of her flourishing filmy career and her name even got enlisted for the "Award for the "Best Actor Female in her career first Filmfare awards.
 
Her first commercial hit song from the movie "Junglee" was "Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe" written by “Aghajani Kashmeri” and sang by the legend “Mohammed Rafi sahib” was a big success. Junglee was written and this song brought her to the limelight. Directors and producers started noticing her. And after that many offers came across her way and she became the top leading heroine in the '60s. She brought her image  "for the films based on the "Love stories" as a "Romantic" Heroine.”Manmohan Desai” directed film "Bluff Master" was her another commercial hit and sec with "Shammi Kapoor" in (1960-70). During the period of (1960-80), she appeared in many hit films like "Aayi Milan Ki Bela"," Jhuk Gaya Aasman","Saaz Aur Awaaz","Aao Pyaar Karen" and more other hits.
 
She married in 1966 to "Dalip Kumar" who was famous with the title of his intense roles in the films as "Tragedy King".At the time of marriage, Saira Bano was just 22 years and Dalip sahib was 44 years. She was liked Dalip Kumar since her childhood and she dreamed to get married to him when she saw the first film she lost her heart and now the Indian films great actor and superstar is her husband. After the marriage, she did film 1968 released film "Padosan" opposite "Sunil Dutt" was the super-duper hit and overnight she became the top leading actress of her time. Her fate gave her complete support, and she had a number of offers in her way, and her other commercial hits are Victoria No. 203, Choti Bahu, Sagina. She did many films with Dalip Kumar but "Gopi" was the only super hit film by this couple. She was had paired with Dharam Ji, and this pair got other successful hits at the box office was   Aadmi Aur Insaan, Pocket Maar, Jwar Bhata, and  Resham Ki Dori. She chose to leave films and wanted to take a break from the cinema in 1976. After her break from the films, she played a cameo role in the film Duniya-1984 released opposite to Husband "Dilip Kumar," and the song "Teri Meri Zindagi" became the more popular song.

She was born to actress Naseem Banu and Mian Ehsan-ul-Haq, who was a filmmaker. She has an elder brother named Sultan Ahmed (father of actress Shaheen Banu and grandfather of actress Sayyeshaa Saigal). She married superstar Dilip Kumar on 11-10-1966. Her husband died on 07-07-2021 (Wednesday) at the age of 98. Film actress Sayyeshaa Saigal is her grand niece. She has no child and never regretted it.
