Shrinivas was raised with his siblings in Hubbali, Karnataka. He obtained his master’s degree in Physics from the coveted IIT, Delhi. He then enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley and did his PhD from there. Post the completion of his studies, he started his professional career as a professor at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. He is best known for the key discoveries that he has made in astronomy observing wide range of wavelengths.

To become a radio astronomer, he studied all about Milky Way Galaxy under the guidance of Carl Heiles. He wrote several review articles along with his mentor Carl Heiles and has been regarded as one of the best in the field of interstellar medium. Using a supercomputer, he discovered the first globular cluster pulsar in the year 1987. His discovery that soft gamma-ray repeaters are neutron stars led to the complete understanding of soft gamma ray repeaters. He was the member of the team (Caltech team) which observed the first irrefutable substellar object (brown dwarf) which orbited around the star named Gliese 229. He was instrumental in identifying optical transients such as calcium rich supernova, luminous red nova, and superluminous supernova. For his contribution to astronomy, he has been felicitated with the Dan David Prize in the year 2017. The very same year for his research in Physical Sciences, he was also given Infosys prize.
