Abhishek Chaubey grew up in cities like Patna, Ranchi, and Jamshedpur. He completed his Higher Secondary schooling from Siva Sivani Public School in Hyderabad. He completed his graduation in English Literature from the Hindu College in New Delhi. His interest in films brought him to Mumbai and in Mumbai to study about Film & Television Production; he joined the Xavier Institute of Communication.
 
He got associated with the cinematic world as an assistant director of Vishal Bhardwaj. He assisted him in his debut film Makdee in 2002 and in the coming years, Chaubey worked on three other ventures of Bhardwaj's films. He assisted him in Maqbool, and after which he besides serving as an assistant director also co-written the screenplay of Omkara and Kaminey. Both these films were not just box-office hit but also well-applauded by critics as well. These films paved the way for him to start independently directing films on his own.
 
In 2010 he made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film Ishqiya. The film had Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah in starring roles. Critics and Fans were in full praise for this talented director. He then directed its sequel titled Dedh Ishqiya four years later in 2014. Meanwhile, he also wrote the screenplay of Vishal Bhardwaj's film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola.  In 2016, he directed and wrote the intense crime thriller film titled Udta Punjab. The film was both critical and commercial hit.
