Arati Saha was born on 24-09-1940 in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. She was an Indian-Bengali Swimmer & Sportswoman who was the first Indian woman that swim across the English Channel.

Arati Saha Complete Bio & Career

Arati Saha was born on 24 September 1940. She was the swimmer by profession. She started swimming from the age of 4. Sachin Nag recognized her talent and she considered Mihir Sen as her idol and followed him. Her training in swimming is from Hatkhola Swimming Club. She won her first medal at the age of 5 in 110 yards freestyle and commenced her career.
 
She kick-started her career by winning 22 State level competitions. Her main fields were freestyle and Breaststroke. She participated in the national championship in 1948 and won a silver medal. She also set numerous records. At the 1952 summer Olympics, she got the opportunity to represent India along with her competitor named, Dolly Nazir. At the Olympics, she participated in 200 meters of breaststroke. She regards Brojen das as her inspiration in the field. Brojen Das was also impressed by her talent that he recommended her name to Butlin International Cross Channel Swimming Race.
 
Her well-wishers like Mihir Sen, Dr. Arun Gupta, and Gour Mukherjee took the initiative of raising funds for her trip so that she could participate. Unfortunately, the fund raised was less. The then Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru also encouraged her talent and rended his help. After the issue got solved, she commenced her training.  On 27 August 1959, her race was scheduled. She was determined all through her race and didn’t let her morale down despite difficulties. Eventually, she reached the finishing point.
