Short Biography

Arun Khetarpal was born on 14-10-1950 in Pune in the state of Maharashtra, India. He was an Indian Army Officer who served as a Second Lieutenant and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra. He was killed during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War in the Battle of Basantar. He is remembered to date as the Indian tank ace of aces because of the confirmed destruction of the enemy's 10 tanks.

Arun Khetarpal was born and grew up in a Hindu Khatri family of soldiers. He did his schooling at St. Columba's School in Delhi followed by The Lawrence School in Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh. His father, garndfather & greatgrandfather all served in the Indian Army. Following his militant family, he joined the  the National Defence Academy in 1967 at the age of 17 and became the Foxtrot Squadron Cadet Captain of the 38th Course.

Later, he joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and got the chance of carrying the President's colour. He was commissioned into the 17 Poona Horse on 13-06-1971. In the same year Indo-Pakistan War was started and the command of the 47th Infantry Brigade of the Indian Army was assigned to the 17 Poona Horse. When his company saw the action in the Shakargarh on 15-12-1971, they decided to push through the mine-field, however, the place was extensively mined.

On 16-12-1971 during this action, he destroyed 10 Pakistani Patton tanks, and he was hit by enemy fire. He got the order from his superior officer over the radio to abandon his burning tank, but his last words were "No, Sir, I will not abandon my tank. My main gun is still working and I will get these bastards". Finally, he was killed by enemy fire.
