Astad Deboo Complete Bio & Career

Astad Deboo relocated with his family to Jamshedpur at the young age of 6 as his father was employed at Tata Steel. He started getting trained in classical Indian dance form Kathak from Prahlad Das and Indra Kumar Mohanty at the young age of 6. After completion of his school education from Loyola School in Jamshedpur, he relocated to Mumbai and enrolled at Podar College in Mumbai to study B.Com. In Mumbai, he got attracted to art forms after watching contemporary dance performed by the famous American Louis Dance Company. Thus, he made up his mind to build a career in art.
 
After receiving help from Uttara Asha Coorlawala, he enrolled at the Martha Graham Centre of Contemporary Dance. Subsequently, he got enrolled at the London School of Contemporary Dance and it was there where he got trained in Martha Graham’s contemporary dance techniques. He then went to New York and learned Jose Limon’s techniques. Before returning back to India, he learned few more techniques from other people and there and also performed at various stage shows. In 1977, he came back to India and started learning Kathakali from Guru E. Krishna Panikar in Kerala. After which, he performed at the popular Guruvayur Temple. He after exploring all these dance forms amalgamated a unique dance style by fusing Indian classical and Western dance techniques.
 
An opportunity of a lifetime came his way in the year 1986 when he was approached to choreograph prime ballerina for Maya Plisetskaya. He in his career performed all around the globe and associated with legendary artists such as Pink Floyd, Alison Becker and Pina Bausch.
