Balram Jakhar was born to Patodevi Jakhar and Chaudhari Rajaram Jakhar in the Panchkosi village of Ferozepur district, Punjab on 23rd August 1923. Balram Jakhar was a distinguished name in the Indian political arena. He was a celebrated Parliamentarian and served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh from 2004 to 2009.

Balram Jakhar, a Veteran Congress leader, Governor, former Lok Sabha Speaker, an administrator was a great leader. A person who rose from a remote village and followed his passion and continued his journey to the peak of power was born in a farmer family in Punjab and soon joined his family profession. He used modern techniques in farming for the expansion of orchards and vineyards in his lands that further lead to increase in the crop yield. His leadership quality into a farming community ultimately leads him to become an active member in politics at a higher level. He completed his graduation from undivided Punjab-Lahore town and was well skilled in languages like English, Sanskrit, Hindi, and Urdu apart from Punjabi.
 
He was elected four times as a Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha, mainly in 1980, 1984, 1991 and 1998. He has also served as a Central Agriculture Minister in the Ministry of Prime Minister PV Narshimha Rao in 1991, was elected as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh for a tenure of 5yrs.
 
He was a speaker for Lok Sabha for almost two terms from 1980-1989 and worked on the automation and computerisation of House works. He became the first Asian to be elected as chairman of the Commonwealth Parliament Executive Forum.
 
Being in any role issues and concerns like agriculture, farmers and modernisation of Parliament Secretariwerehis top most priorities. He was a socialist and President of committees like Bharat KrishakSamajand Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Trust Management Committee.
 
He has served in the fruit growing sector and was rewarded with “All India Udyan Pandit” award for his extraordinary contribution. His work was incredible, so as his dedication, the foundation of Parliament museum was his undertaking. He was also awarded a Doctorate degree in Science for his immense work in the Agriculture field by Haryana Agricultural University Hisar and Gurukul Kangri Visvavidyalaya Haridwar.
