An Olympic gold medal winner, and college football player, Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, is also a television personality. She was diagnosed with dyslexia in her childhood. She studied at Sleepy Hollow High School and Newtown High School
She received a football scholarship to study at Graceland College. However, she had to stop playing as a result of a knee injury which required surgery. Jenner’s track coach persuaded her to try decathlon, and in 1970, she got the fifth place at her debut at the Drake Relays.
Jenner states that her first time of knowing she wanted to excel at the decathlon was after being inspired by Soviet Mykola Avilov whom she saw after placing tenth at the Summer Olympics of 1972. Her coach was Bert Bonanno when she trained at the San Jose City College. Other fellow athletes who went to the Olympics that trained at San Jose include Millard Hampton, Andre Phillips, John Powell, and Mac Wilkins. In the year 1974, Jenner was the American champion of the decathlon event. She later won a gold medal at 1975 Pan American Games. Jenner started the tradition of carrying the American flag after an event during a victory lap. She won the gold medal for Decathlon at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. This brought the fame of ‘An All-American Hero’. This win also came with the third successive world record by Jenner. After her win at the Olympics, she won the James E. Sullivan Award and was given the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year title in 1976.
Her popularity after the Olympic medal helped her to establish as a model, actor, and television personality. Her post-Olympic career involves being a spokesperson for several brands including Minolta, Tropicana, and Wheaties. The most popular television role of her was in E! TV’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Jenner's other notable television performances include ‘I’m a celebrity.. Get Me Out of Here!’, ‘ChiPs’, ‘Grambling’s White Tiger’ and others. Although previously identified as male, in 2015, she came out as a trans woman and stated that undergone surgery for sexual reassignment. She announced her change of name to Caitlyn in the cover story on Vanity Fair. A reality show titled ‘I Am Cait’ was launched by her which mainly highlighted her gender transition.
The win of 1976 Olympics Gold Medal also brought her the unofficial title of ‘World’s Greatest Athlete’. In 1980, she was named into the US National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Further, in 1986, Jenner was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame.
