Chen Guangcheng was born on 12 Nov 1971. He is a civil rights activist from China. He gained his education from the Nanjing University of traditional Chinese medicine. He began his role as an activist in 199 when he protested against the taxes. People with disabilities are exempted from tax but the authorities were charging taxes from them and Chen’s family. He was successful in his efforts. British foundations funded him and consequently, he spoke fir disability rights without any fear of China law society.
 
An elderly blind couple approached him with a similar issue of taxes. Instead, the government should provide them assistance and exemption from taxes. Chen not only fought fir them but won also. Later on in 1997, the leader of his village started a system, two field systems that gave access to the government over 60% of the land. On learning this, Chen asked the authorities to end this as this was illegal and it has amounted to the suffering of the local people. He also raised his voice against pollution caused by the paper mill by dumping toxic waste into the river and exposing the wildlife and crops to risk. Besides this, it is also called various health problems related to the spine. The petition was signed and consequently, the mill was closed. Apart from this, the fund was also demanded by Cheng in order to supply clean drinking water to the people.
 
He also addressed the issue of illegal land requisitions and filed a complaint about the same. China’s one-child policy was also opposed by him. The policy led to abortions and forced sterilizations. The case turned so grave that it gathered international media attention. Chen was also placed under house arrest in 2005.
