David Luiz began his career playing for Esporte Clube Vitoria in Bahia and made his debut. Soon he became the first team player. In 2006, Luiz helped Vitoria to get to Série A, thus attracting attention of many clubs.
 
In 2007, David switched to Benfica. In 2008/09, he played at the position of a left back, which was not really appropriate for him. In January 2009, he netted the first goal for Benfica and secured a victory in the match against Braga (1-0).
 
At the end of 2009, Luiz extended the term of his contract with Benfica to 2015 and admitted it was one of the most exciting days of his life. In 2009/10 Benfica won Primeira Liga and wrapped up Taça da Liga. In the winter 2011, David joined Chelsea by signing a five-year contract. The Brazilian became an integral part of the London side. However, with the arrival of Jose Mourinho he fell out of favor and in the summer 2014 moved to Paris Saint-Germain in an astonishing €50m deal.
 
From 2010, David Luiz has played for the Brazil national team. David Luiz captained Brazil for the first time, appearing in a 1–0 win against South Africa in São Paulo in the year 2012. David Luiz was named in Brazil's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He also played for Brazil at the 2015 Copa América in Chile. Although primarily a centre back, David Luiz can also be deployed as a defensive midfielder, and has drawn praise for his physical strength, work-rate, technique, and range of distribution as a defender, as well as his personality, composure in possession, and confidence on the ball, which enables him to play the ball out from the back or launch an attack with long balls after winning back possession. A powerful striker of the ball from distance, Luiz has also been known to take and score from long-range free kicks.
