Short Biography

The Indian-born British singer, Engelbert Humperdinck, with a big hit song “Release Me (And let me love again)” was born in Madras, British India (present-day Chennai) on 02 May 1936. The loved name given by his parents is Arnold George Dorsey. The child, when ten, moved to Leicester, England with his family.

Engelbert Humperdinck Complete Bio & Career

This struggling singer started his career by playing saxophones in nightclubs and there only he began singing under the name of Gerry Dorsey for almost a decade. His first chance to record in 1958 was with Decca Records and his first song was not a hit. After meeting the manager Tom Jones, he followed his advice and changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck only professionally in 1965. His first success was achieved in July 1966 in Belgium while representing England in the annual Knokke song contest. Three months later in October 1966, he left his mark with “Doomage, Doomage”.
 
Following this, he recorded three songs in the mid-1960s. In 1967, the biggest hit of his life “Release Me” made him the superstar and this version spent 56 weeks in top 50. It was believed that 85000 copies of Release Me were sold a day. Following this biggest ever hit, he continued to leave his marks and make his way in the field of singing. He continued to give his hits and this ongoing year marks his 50th anniversary of international chart success.

Humperdinck married Patricia Healey in 1964. They are blessed with four children. He is often called as “King of Romance”.  He left his school at age of 15 and then started singing in men’s club and then his music career started with struggles in life and eventually reaching the heights of success.
