Erykah Badu Complete Bio & Career

Erykah Badu’s actual name is Erica Abi Wright. She was raised by her actress mother named Kolleen Maria Gipson. She was exposed to singing, acting, and dancing from a very early age. She sang and danced for her mother from a very tender age and soon started performing in shows at the local Dallas Theater Center. She enrolled at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts to hone her singing and dancing skills. 
 
Badu's debut album was titled Baduizm, in the year 1997. The album had soulful hits such as "Next Lifetime", "Appletree" and "On & On," among others. Her next album LP, Live released in the same year. During the recording, she was also pregnant with her 1st child. She gave birth to son Seven Sirius, which she had with Outkast artist André 3000. The album was chartbuster the moment it released and went double platinum. Her unmatchable talent was soon established and this album’s song "Tyrone," which she completely improvised on stage broke all records. Her third album was titled Mama's Gun, which released in the year 2000. In addition to singing for her album, she also sang the soundtrack of the Spike Lee’s film titled Bamboozled. She was high in demand and finally decided to go on tour and toured throughout the globe for the next few years, on her "Frustrated Artist Tour". Her song "Love of My Life Worldwide" which featured Queen Latifah, Bahamadia, and Angie Stone won her another Grammy, this time for best R&B song.
 
Her 4th studio album titled New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War was released in the year 2008. Rolling Stone was so impressed with the songs of this album that he named it as the album of the year. Her fifth studio album titled New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh was released in the year 2010 with a softer tone than its predecessor. She is arguably the reigning queen of neo-soul. She has even today continued to create art, music, and spirituality wherever she has performed.
 
She is indeed a global icon with a huge social media following. She has over 5 million followers on Instagram, 3.5 million on Twitter, and over 4 million on Facebook. She like many others has created controversies more often than not for her comments which haven’t gone well with media and her fans.
