Gaurav Khanna was born and grew up in Kanpur into a Hindu Kshatriya family. He did his schooling at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School in Kanpur. Latter, he attended Dr Virendra Swarup Education Centre in Kanpur and completed his degree in Master of Business Administration (MBA).
After completaion of his MBA, he worked in an IT firm as a marketing manager. He started his career in showbiz industry as a model and appeared in several television commercials, including Dinesh Suting, TATA Venture, Gillette, Windows Mobile, and UltraTech Cement. He made his acting debut in the Hindi television series 'Siddhanth' in 2005 as Tanmay Bakshi. Next, he was seen in Bhabhi, Kumkum - EkPyaraSaBandhan, and Jamegi Jodi.com.
In 2007, he got his first lead role in the Hindi television series 'Meri Doli Tere Angana' as Ruhaan Oberoi opposite Priyamvada Sawant and others. Next, he was seen again as lead actor in 'Jeevan Saathi - HumsafarZindagiKe' as Neil Fernandes opposite Vaani Sharma. The serial was aired on Colors TV from 2008 to 2009, and he received much acclaimed from the critics and audience for his performance. His next noteable work was seen in 'Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam' from 2009 to 2010 as Abeer Bajpayee opposite Yami Gautam, for which he remember to date. Next, he was seen in several hit television series including, Dil Se Diya Vachan, CID, and Anupamaa. For his performance in Anupamaa, he received several nominations and won the Indian Telly Awards, and Bollywood Hungama Style Icons.
Besides acting, he hosted the television show based on dance classes titled 'Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan' in 2011. He also participated in several television shows including Box Cricket League 1, Box Cricket League 2, Celebrity MasterChef India, and Bigg Boss 19. He participated in Celebrity MasterChef India in 2025 as a contestant and became the winner of the season. In the same year, he participated in Bigg Boss 19 as contestant and received honour as a winner with the prize of INR 50 Lakh.
