Jana Novotna was a Cech professional tennis player. She is best recognized for her rare style of serve and volley.

Jana Novotna began playing professional tennis in 1987. Early in her career,  she had success as a doubles player. Later in the 1990s, she found success as a singles player after she got Hana Mandlikova as her coach. She had her early success with 1990 French Open and reached the semi-finals, where she faced defeat against Steffi Graf. In 1991, she went on to be the runner-up at the Australian Open. She won the Wimbledon Singles title in 1998  by defeating Nathalie Tauziat. Thus, she became the oldest first-time Grand slam singles titled winner. In her career, Novotna had won 12 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles and 4 mixed doubles titles.  She had also won the Olympic Silver medal in Women’s doubles event in 1988 and bagged the bronze medal in the women’s singles event in 1996. She had also won the Fed Cup representing the Czech Republic.

She became the 15th woman in the Open Era to have won over 500 career singles matches. She was also the 5th player to reach the $10 million career prize money with title wins in all four surfaces. She won 100 titles in her career that spanned about 14 years. In 2005, Novotna was named into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

 She was diagnosed with cancer and with her death, she became the first Women’s Grand Slam singles champion in the Open Era to die.
