Jayabharathi was the leading actress of Malayalam film industry during the decade of the 1970s. She started her career at a young age of 16 with the film titled Penmakkal. This was the beginning of what was about to come in the coming years. For the first few years in her career, she find it extremely difficult to establish herself. She rose to prominence after she won back to back Kerala State Award in 1972 and 1973.

She became one of the most successful Malayalam film actresses and performed with such notable leading men as Madhu, Vincent, Jayan, M. G. Soman, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. Jayabharathi-MG Soman was a famous on-screen pair of the 1970s and early 1980s. One of her famous films was Rathinirvedam, directed by Bharathan, in which she played a woman who fell in love with a boy younger than her. Rathinirvedam is regarded as a landmark in Indian film history. It is one of the most sensuous movies of all time, and is said to have redefined the art of movie making in South India. In addition to acting, she also tried her hand at direction as well. She was last seen in Malayalam film Onnaman in the year 2002. In a career of 35 years, she worked in over 300 Malayalam films and 24 films in Tamil.

She was also seen in Boollywood films such as Pratishodh and Nagin Aur Lootere. The actress is busy these days with her dance school Aswathi Arts Academy, which she runs from home. She is also starting another one in Coimbatore.
