He was born into a sake-brewing family. His father name was Kano Jirosaku and his mother name was Sadako Kano. His mother died, when he was just nine yerars old. He had two elder brothers. He was married to Sumako Takezoe between 1891-1893. The couple togther had nine children including three sons and six daughters. One of his son was Risei Kano, the 2nd president of the IJF (International Judo Federation).
