Kavya Maran was born and grew up in a Hindu Ambalavasi family of millionaires. Her grandfather, Murasoli Maran was a noted politician and her father is a businessman. His father founded Sun Group, when she was only one year old. She is the only child of her parents. She did her schooling at a private school followed by Stella Maris College in Chennai, where she completed her Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree. Later she joined NYU Stern School of Business, New York and completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA).
After completing her MBA from New York, she returned to Chennai and joined her father's business Sun Group. She joined the Sun Group as a CEO of Surisers Hyderabad (SRH). Later, she became an executive director of Sun TV Network, and the head of Sunrisers Leeds, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sun Group has acquired 'The Hundred', a professional cricket league in the United Kingdom.
