M. G. Ramachandran Complete Bio & Career

Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran was fondly known as MGR. He was a renowned actor of his time and went on to become an even renowned politician as well. He was the first actor from the Indian film fraternity who went on to become the Chief Minister of a state. He had a deep passion for acting and hence he enrolled himself in a drama company at a very young age. He landed his first role in the Tamil film through the Tamil film ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ in the year 1936. 
 
After that there was no looking back for him and went on to star in numerous hit films. His acting skills kept getting better and better with time and gave hits after hits with movies such as Thirudadhe, Aayirathil Oruvan, Anbe Vaa, Enga Veettu Pillai, Panam Padaithavan and Mahadevi among others. He also won the National award for his performance in Tamil film Rickshawkaran in 1972.
 
During his film career, he got influenced by Annadurai who was among one of the most prominent leaders during the Dravidian movement. Post that, he ventured into politics and joined Annadurai’s political party DMK. After his death it was Karunanidhi who took charge of the DMK and he started his own political front AIADMK. He served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 to 1984. During his term, he introduced various economic and social policies. He upgraded the free mead scheme during his time and brought various educational reforms as well. He also banned the alcohol in the state tried his best to make sure that Tamil Nadu attracts tourist.

He was born to Melakkath Gopala Menon and Maruthur Satyabhama. He had a brother named M. G. Chakrpani and a sister named Kamalakshi. He first married Chitarikulam Bargavi. She died soon after their marriage and he then married Sathanandavathhi who also died of TB in 1962. He then married V. N. Janaki and remained married to her till his death. Together the couple had a son named Appu Ravindrana and 4 daughters named Geetha Madhumohan, Sudha Vijaykumar, Radha Gopalakrishnan, and Latha Rajendran. In the later stage of his life, he was in a relationship with actress Jayalalitha.
