As a matter of fact, he worked as the thirteenth Finance Minister of Pakistan for the period between 1985 and 1988. Initially, at the beginning stages of his career, he served as the postdoctoral researcher in the Harvard Kennedy School. Later, he came back to his nation and served as the Chief Economist. Consequently, he went to the United States after the completion of election which was then led by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. However, during the 1970s, he portrayed his dedicated work as the Policy Director in the World Bank. Additionally, he worked as a prominent and excellent economic advisor to the person named as McNamara. Subsequently, he worked as the special advisor to William Henry Draper who is the UNDP administrator.
 
Mahbub got a chance to lead the organization of Human Development Report. Later, he decided to open the Human Development Center in his nation located in Islamabad. Additionally, he has also written the book on Human Development known as Reflections on Human Development. Most prominently, his book paved way for a large number of positive changes namely 20:20 Global Compact and also the establishment of the UN Economic and Social Council. As a matter of fact, Haq’s works are regarded as the major change which caused the development in well understanding along with the statistical accounting of development process. Moreover, he is considered as the best visionaries in internal development.
