Mekapati hails from the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, India. He is a former minister of Lok Sabha. He is a member of the YSR Congress Party of Andhra Pradesh. He contested in 9th Lok Sabha, 14 Lok Sabha, 15 Lok Sabha, and 16 Lok Sabha from Ongole, Narasaraopet, and Nellore constituency in Andhra Pradesh. In 1985, he became a member of the legislative assembly from Udayagiri's constituency for INC. He got elected to Lok Sabha from the Ongole constituency in 1989. He then again contested in 2004 and became a member of Lok Sabha from the Narasaraopet constituency.
